Why matching matters
Film has to fit the glass.
Film changes how much of the sun’s heat the glass absorbs. On the wrong glass, uneven heating can crack a pane. This is called thermal stress. The same film can be safe on one window and wrong for the window next to it.
Your window maker’s warranty may have its own terms about film. Check it before you call.
How we check your glass
What we look at on every window.
- Single or double pane: double-pane glass holds more heat, so fewer films are approved for it.
- Tempered or annealed: we look for the tempered stamp in the corner of the glass.
- Tint and low-E coatings: existing tint or coatings change which films are safe.
- Size, direction and shade: big panes, west sun and partial shade all matter.
LLumar film-to-glass guidelines
We follow LLumar’s chart.
LLumar publishes film-to-glass recommendations that list which films are approved for which glass. We follow them. If a film isn’t right for a window, we recommend one that is.
LLumar’s warranty
What LLumar’s written warranty covers.
In plain terms, from LLumar’s limited warranty form:
- Film defects: LLumar warrants its films against bubbling, peeling, crazing, delaminating and corrosion when the film is properly installed by a LLumar dealer. If covered film fails, LLumar replaces it, labor and materials included, at no cost to you.
- Length depends on the film: terms run from 5 years to lifetime depending on the product and whether it’s a home or business. Decorative films carry 5 years.
- Glass breakage and seal failure: approved solar films installed according to LLumar’s film-to-glass chart can carry glass and seal coverage, up to $750 per glass unit. Seal coverage requires your window's own seal warranty to still be in force.
- Keep your paperwork: coverage goes to the original purchaser. Keep the installation record and your receipt.
The fine print
Terms vary by product.
Warranty terms vary by product, and LLumar’s written warranty governs. Some conditions apply: for example, film installed over existing film, or glass that was already cracked or had a failed seal, isn’t covered. Ask us which coverage applies to the film we recommend.
Before we come out
A quick checklist.
- Your window brand and age: often on a label or etched in a corner of the glass.
- Your window warranty: paperwork or the maker’s website.
- Problem windows: tell us if any glass is cracked or fogged between the panes.
- Old film: let us know if any window already has film on it.
